The Order of the Virtuti Militari and Its Cavaliers, 1792-1992
Published in Paperback by Zdzislaw P. Wesolowski (June, 1992)
Authors: Zdzislaw P. Wesolowski and Lech Walesa

Good Reference Material
Obviously a lot of time and effort was put into the research, which is very good.

Although I understand that this is primarily a reference text, some short stories on the acts that led to the individual awards would make very interesting reading.

Very Good Research
Generally a well researched tome on a relatively narrow subject which should interest military historians and especially those (and their families)that were awarded Poland's highest decoration for bravery.

The only negative and disappointment I can find is the author's arrogant self-serving, self-review of his work which he himself characterizes as a "..masterpiece..' Give me a break!

Masterwork on Polish Military and Civilian Decorations
The only book in the world on Polish Civilian and Military Decorations. It contains the history of the Polish decoration system, photographs of 1,400 orders, medals, crosses, badges and insignia from 1705-1985. There are 19 plates in color, large format 400 pages. English language. It also contains statistics on awarded decorations. This book is now a world wide standard and reference work on the subject. The author has recently published a new book on Poland's highest military decoration for valor, equal to the US Medal of Honor or the British Victoria Cross, Order Virtuti Militari and its Cavaliers, 1792-1992. As of 10 December 1996 there are 500 books available. A 2nd edition is planned within the next two years. The author can be contacted directly by email zwesolowsk@aol.com or on Prodigy. Plato for Beginners
Published in Paperback by Writers & Readers (September, 1990)
Authors: Robert Cavalier, Eric Lurio, and Shey Wolvek-Pfister
Average review score:

Hardly worth the money or effort!
This book was so poorly organized! I didn't find what I was looking for, and the "illustrations" are Xerox copies of maps or sculpture pictures. The sentences were boring, and there were spelling and punctuation errors. Overall, the information could have been presented in a much more concise and effective way.

Negativity Stinks!
Like other "for Beginner" books, the Plato version is also an excellent and concise overview for those who want a quick read. Illustrations aren't anything to marvel at, but they do make for a more interesting book. Despite the negative criticism in other reviews (such as that posed by the Seattle reader,) I recommend the book highly. As for spelling mistakes, that is easily explained because it is meant foremost for a British audience where words such as center are spelled centre. No big deal. TLC

You always end up back at Plato....
I guess you get out of this book what you bring to it. Having already been familiar with most of Plato's teachings, as well as his times, I found this volume to be a delightful refresher course. Instead of a dry, condensed outline it is a humorous and original comprehensive overview. Cavalier obviously knows his dialogs- I found no "dumbing down" here.
Those teachers of mine that stressed that if one wanted to be "truly educated" one had to be familiar with Plato's teachings were absolutely correct. When you start digging into subjects of true and lasting worth you always end up back at Plato. When I was younger I would have laughed at the idea that some "dry as dust" greek philosopher could ever be meaningful to me. You see, I confused Plato's philosophy with the "dry as dust" approach that passes for philosophy in modern times. Plato himself not only asked what Truth, Justice, and Beauty were- he actually knew that they really existed as Ultimates. The same with Good- he knew it existed. Plato accepted the validity of omens, dreams, the mysteries, and the pre-existance of the human soul, as well as, an afterlife. It was Plato who gave us the concept of "heaven." In fact, if you examine the words that were put in Christ's mouth in the New Testament you find that every statement is a paraphrase of Plato.
As for political matters, Plato believed that concern over one's own wealth and power was the source of most conflict, and that the goal of any system of laws and government should be making all people as happy and friendly as possible- and not merely a privaleged elite.
I can't help but speculate on how different western culture would have been if Plato's undiluted teachings, or even Plotinus' neoplatonism, had been the real spiritual core of our civilization.

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel : An Owner's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet
Published in Hardcover by Howell Book House (April, 2000)

Good for Those Thinking of Purchasing a Cav
I found a lot of interesting information in this book, but it seemed to be more about dogs in general than the specific breed. In fact, the second half of the book has pictures of other breeds. Overall, I think this book is a nice introduction to the breed but not very informative for those who already are well acquainted with the breed.

Not what I was looking for
This started out good, but then strayed from the king charles. I did get some good info. I liked the pictures.

I'M SMARTER NOW.....
I ENJOYED THIS BOOK VERY MUCH. I DO KNOW A GREAT DEAL ABOUT THIS BREED AND FOUND IT ONE I COULD RECOMMEND TO NEW PUPPY OWNERS AS REQUIRED READING. THE AUTHOR WAS INFORMATIVE AND INTERESTING. THE DOGS ILLUSTRATED WERE LOVELY. I AM IN LOVE WITH THE DOG ON THE COVER.....HE IS A REAL "KEEPER."
I WAS IMPRESSED WITH THE DISCUSSION ON A RAW DIET AND MANY OTHER TOPICS NOT USUALLY COVERED IN AN INTRODUCTORY BOOK.

The King's Cavalier
THE KING'S CAVALIER is in the same tradition of rich pageantry, high adventure, and unforgettable romance. Against the violent background of 16th century France, he tells the thrill-packed story of Blaise de Lalliere, an impulsive young night who fell in love with the one girl he should never have dreamed of -- Anne Russell, the beautiful redhead desired by the King himself! What happens when Blaise and Anne flee across France, sharing the intimacies of their hazardous journey, and pursued by the ruthless forces of the jealousy-maddened King, makes an adventure and suspense story that never falters -- and a love story you will never forget!

too generic for the breed.
This book has the basics but it is obvious that Four Paws has their hands in this. The book advertises Four Paws Products and the rest is basics. This book is not written from a knowledgable viewpoint. It is a bunch of hype. There are other MUCH better written books on the breed. My favorite is a new book by well known breeder of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Barbara Garnet-Smith. I've recommendend her book to all my new puppy owners.

beautiful pictures and much basic information
I loved this book. So many beautiful pictures of the cavalier king charles. I am the proud owner of Lily, 8mths old and the book helped me tremendously when it came to basic information. HOw to house train, what to feed her, how to bathe her. I highly recomend this book.

Uncannily Canned
The contents of this book are almost entirely canned. While the basic electronic theory section was well written, I frankly need more diagrams and pictures to specific issues rather than "be careful removing the engine" hype lines. What I know how to do to my car I know from my Dad (oil filter, air filter...easy stuff), what I want to know are things like rewiring the stereo system. Not enough information to help me there... the plus side is that I found out how easy Amazon's return process works, just print the label and go!

No checkball locations
I needed information on rebuilding the tranny on my 1996 pontiac sunbird their is nothing ion it at all.

Great book for the amateur auto repairer
Got the book to help repair window mechanism. Told me everthing I needed to know, step by step, pictures and all. Highly recommend.

Beginning Steel Drum
Published in Paperback by Warner Brothers Publications (July, 1999)
Authors: Othello Molineaux and Debbie Cavalier
Average review score:

Disappointing at best
Having bought a steel drum, I was all ready to learn how to play it. I have to agree with the other reviewer that it's very disappointing - I know how to read music and know a little about chords, etc., but this book was still just about worthless. It had some info about playing chords that would be found in any music book, and the info on techniques was next to worthless - just a sentence or two, as the other reviewer said. The clips are songs you probably wouldn't want to play and just short little parts of them. The author, who really is a great steel drum player, should've given us at least a tiny example of what really can be done with a steel drum. Also the other types of drums - double seconds, basses, etc. are not even mentioned. There is no info on sources of supplies, music, drums, etc., which really is needed for such a relatively rare instrument. Save yourself the money and try to find an instructor!!

Novice Beware!
Unless you already know how to play a musical instrument (or at least know how to read music) this book will be of little value to you. Actually, it's not so much a book as it is a pamphlet. The only thing it accomplishes is that it shows you where the notes are on the pan.

After a few introductory words, here is the 6th sentence in the "book":

"The tuning consists of a circle of 5ths or 4ths, there are two circles of a complete octave and one circle of five notes. The range of the drum is from middle C up two octaves and a major third to E."

If that quote doesn't mean anything to you, don't expect to really understand it after reading the pamphlet. Admittedly, the words are, in fact, followed by two diagrams that show what "up a 4th" and "down a 5th" mean. But add that to all the following discussion about scales, and you still have no idea why any of it matters.

The section entitled "Technique" consists of a picture of a hand holding a drum stick and the words: "The stick has to be able to bounce off the notes. There is a slightly tighter grip employed when sticking the higher notes..." Add to that the handy note to play the left side of the drum with the left hand and the right side with the right hand and...well...I guess you're ready to start practicing sticking, because there's not much more info on the subject.

Finally, the CD consists of 30-second clips, not complete songs. Oh yeh, unless you know how to read music, there's no clue as to where even the first note is in any of the "songs".

Begining Steel Drum
This is a wonderful book for learning how to play steel drums. Since there is not alot of infromation out in the world about this beautiful instrament, it is a pleasure to see such a work. I whole-heartedly recomend this book to anyone wishing to learn the art of steel drum, and I hope everyone finds what they are looking for in this this book. I know I have!

Cavalier and Yankee: The Old South and American National Character
Published in Paperback by Oxford Univ Pr on Demand (February, 1993)
Author: William Robert Taylor
Average review score:

Disappointing
If you think this book details the divurgence of American culture in the 1800s, you will be disappointed. Author spends too much time encapsulating the plots of dozens of novels, some of them rather obscure. His main point of the south as a declining culture and thus a culture winding its way to secession out of frustration is dubious. Author spends a lot of time detailing the decline of Virginia's worn out tobacco plantations but chooses not to discuss the spectacular economic growth of the South's western cotton plantations.

Chilton's General Motors Cavalier/Sunbird/Skyhawk/Firenza: 1982-94 Repair Manual (Chilton's Total Car Care Repair Manual)
Published in Paperback by Chilton/Haynes (16 September, 1999)
Authors: Chilton and Np-Chilton
Average review score:

A GLANCE OF EVERYTHING
I was really dispointed at this book, it tries to cover everything, but at the end it covers nothing. Too many models to cover in just one book, too many subjects to cover in a single book, it is just a glance of everything. It barely lets you know a part exists, but doesn't tell you where it is or how to replace it.
I wanted to know where the crankshaft sensor is in my cavalier, I didn't find any pictures, they explain how to replace it in just 5 or 6 lines, any warnings, oh! sure I had trouble with this sensor.
The book doesn't explain the operation theory, and if you want to know something about Electronic Control Modules on these models, this is the wrong book.

Gm Chevrolet Cavalier and Pontiac Sunfire: Automotive Repair Manual (Haynes Automotive Repair Manual Series)
Published in Paperback by Haynes Publishing (October, 1998)
Authors: Robert Maddox, Mike Stubblefield, John Harold Haynes, and Haynes Publishing
Average review score:

Not for Non-Mechanics
I hoped this book would help me perform basic maintenance, make very minor repairs and have some idea of what the problem is when I have to take the car to the mechanic. Unfortunately, the book is very hard to understand and information is hard to find in it. Maybe a professional mechanic could understand it, but then a professional mechanic would be probably have official information from GM. The information may be accurate (I have no way of knowing), but this book makes little attempt to help out the beginner.
